Yarrawonga Tourism Trail Officially Opened

02.03.21

The $6.3million Yarrawonga Tourism Trail was officially opened last Thursday by Federal Member for Nicholls Damian Drum and Moira Shire Mayor Libro Mustica with representatives from Goulburn-Murray Water and Lotus Living also present.

The Yarrawonga Tourist Trail is a $6.3 million project supported by a grant of $2.7 million from the Federal Government, auspiced by Moira Shire Council, and $2.1 million from Lotus Living as well as $612,000 from the Murray Darling Basin Authority (MDBA) with both Lotus Living and MDBA pitching in another $900,000 between them.

Moira Shire Mayor Libro Mustica said the 5km tourist trail runs from the current main traffic bridge at the end of Belmore Street and along the foreshore of Lake Mulwala before terminating at Silverwood’s The Sebel luxury international hotel.

“Works to complete this fantastic asset included stabilisation of the bank and construction of a shared pathway along an 800m section of River Road undertaken by Goulburn-Murray Water (GMW),” Cr Mustica said.

“These improvements guard against foreshore erosion and ensure the ongoing enjoyment and safety of recreational users while safeguarding water quality and environmental values of the lake.

“We know Lake Mulwala is a popular spot for recreational activities such as fishing, boating, walking, and bird and wildlife watching.

“Lotus Living undertook works including the development of shared pathways, a boardwalk, jetties, retaining wall and viewing platforms as well as various landscaping features.

“This trail now provides safe, off road passage offering picturesque and uninterrupted views across Lake Mulwala for the thousands of tourists who visit the region each year.”

Mr Drum said the tourism trail complemented a growing number of visitor experiences on Lake Mulwala which include the Sebel, Black Bull Golf Course and of course the array of on-water activities.

“The project has really modernised the lake foreshore, making it more appealing for locals and tourists alike to enjoy a walk or picnic along the beautiful Lake Mulwala,” Mr Drum said.

“Another key benefit of this project is that it enhances the liveability appeal of the region through enhanced on and off water recreation infrastructure along this section of the regionally significant Lake Mulwala foreshore.

“With widespread international travel likely to be off the cards for the remainder of this year at least, this tourism trail in Yarrawonga is yet another reason for domestic tourists to come and experience all that this magnificent area has to offer.”

Lotus Living General Manager Daniel Smith said Lotus Living was delighted to be a contributing partner in the project.

“Lotus Living, developer of the Silverwoods Golf and Lifestyle Resort incorporating The Sebel Yarrawonga and Black Bull Golf Course is a very proud contributing partner supporting this significant project to the area,” Mr Smith said.

“ To see commencement of construction, final delivery and now official launch of the Yarrawonga Tourist Trail which covers the main traffic bridge at the end of Belmore Street and now connecting along the stunning foreshore of Lake Mulwala before terminating at our Silverwoods development, is another tremendous milestone for Yarrawonga.”
